Event description

Description

Join us at the historic Illini Union in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois for the 7th annual gathering of the Scenario Planning Applications Network (SPAN). This year’s theme is “Strengthening the Network: Opportunities and Strategies for the Future of SPAN.” Building on years of work funded by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, this intimate symposium serves as the country’s leading work-session for tool developers, researchers, and planning practitioners.

About SPAN: SPAN (previously Open Planning Tools Group) is a US-based group of tool developers, practitioners and academics. We are interested in all scales of development - urban, suburban and rural. Our applications bridge all phases of planning, including context assessment, scenario generation, indicator development, outcome analysis, plan making and public engagement and communications. We are motivated by the ideal of open source, accessible platforms and tools that encourage wide adoption of useful methods and techniques for planning. More information about SPAN is available at http://scenarioplanning.io.

Keynote speaker: Bob Dean, Deputy Executive Director, Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP)

Networking: Expected participants include tools developers (such as Fregonese Associates, PlaceMatters), local and regional governments (CMAP, MAPC, Cities of Champaign and Urbana), State and Federal Agencies (ODOT, USEPA, FHWY), research centers (Sonoran Institute), and academic institutes (LILP, UIUC). Opportunities for attendees also include connecting with representatives from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), and CyberGIS Center.

Registration: Registration fee includes two days of symposium sessions, keynote address, opening dinner, two breakfasts, and two lunches. Registration fee is $200 before October 31st and $250 after, so today!

Travel: Champaign-Urbana is two hours drive/train-ride from Chicago. A university-run airport (CMI) offers connections to Chicago and Dallas. Good and affordable hotels options include Hyatt Place, I-Hotel, and The Union with nearby food & entertainment.

About the host: The Department of Urban and Regional Planning is an established unit in an internationally reputable university. Our Master of Urban Planning program is ranked third in the nation by Planetizen and we commemorated 100 years of planning education at Illinois in 2013.

Logistics and up-to-date information will be posted on the SPAN website.

For questions, please contact Critter Thompson (registraion, agenda) or Arnab Chakraborty (venue, location).
