Description

SCCC Tunnel of Oppression - This event is for SCCC Students, Faculty, Administrators and Staff

The Office of Campus Activities and Student Leadership Development, along with the College-wide LGBTQ+ Literacy Training sub-committee of the LGBTQ+ Task Force are pleased to invite you and/or your classes to participate in a compelling event we are planning for the spring 2017 semester.

On Wednesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 6, in the Babylon Student Center on the Ammerman Campus, participants will have the opportunity to experience the “Tunnel of Oppression”. The “Tunnel of Oppression” is a nationally recognized, interactive, multi-sensory experience that takes participants through various exhibits that depict active scenarios of oppression in society. These may include racism, sexism, classism, ableism, heterosexism, transphobia, sizeism, xenophobia, belief-based bigotry, among others.

The program takes place in 60 minute modules with cohorts of 15-20 people and includes a guided walk through the exhibit, and a facilitated dialogue session to process the experience. The purpose of the Tunnel is to address social injustice and increase awareness of types of oppression and its effect on both dominant and non-dominant identities. The experiences are designed to educate participants about the systemic nature of oppression and its impact. This leads to a powerful experience that sometimes leaves participants feeling uncomfortable and deciding what future steps they should take to support social justice.

The Tunnel will operate between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. If you are interested in participating or bringing your class please register at the link below by Thursday, March 23, 2017 so that we may arrange for ample staffing. Registration is mandatory to ensure that all interested participants can be accommodated.
