Event description

Description

Join us for a conversation on how design leaders approach operational design while the company grows.

In this panel we will explore Design Ops with four leaders shaping this practice:

  • Courtney Kaplan - Director of Design Program Management, Facebook
  • Meredith Black - Head of Design Operations, Pinterest
  • Adrienne Allnutt - Director, UX Design & Research Ops, LinkedIn
  • Lauren Liao - Director, Strategy & Ops, Design & Research Lead, Twitter

We will discuss organizational structure, we’ll dive into different types of design ops roles and how they can help manage to design better products at scale. We'll look at how their teams create effective design processes that enhance transparency, how they set design standards and develop design tools, as well as how they define high-level strategy and connect people with opportunities.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Courtney Kaplan | Director of Design Program Management, at Facebook

After joining Facebook in 2013, Courtney started the Design Program Management discipline to help build a rapidly growing business design team. Today, she is the Director of Design Program Management supporting a team in the Ads and Business Platform at Facebook that has grown tenfold in 5 years. The DPM discipline has grown rapidly throughout Facebook Design with a focus on managing programs in onboarding, industry education, customer understanding, driving specific product teams in planning, execution as well as driving design standards and developing design tools.

She is passionate about building strong design organizations that leverage talent in all Design disciplines; while creating robust professional paths for a team of talented DPMs devoted to bringing (some) order to chaos.

Before Facebook, Courtney was a principal at Hot Studio in San Francisco leading the Program Planning team before heading up Client Development.

Meredith Black | Head of Design Operations at Pinterest

Meredith Black is the Head of Design Operations at Pinterest where she manages the Program Management and Designer Experience teams, overseeing the process, team growth and design culture. From solving problems on the ground, defining high-level strategy, and connecting people with opportunity, Meredith has experience growing orgs and setting them up for success and has co-authored the book, “The Design Ops Handbook”

Prior to Pinterest, Meredith worked at design firms Hot Studio (acquired by Facebook) and IDEO. Her love for design runs deep. Real deep.

Adrienne Allnutt | Director, UX Design & Research Ops at LinkedIn

Adrienne is currently leading the User Experience Design and Research Ops team at LinkedIn where she has grown the team of program managers and specialists over the past 4+ years. She thrives on designing experiences for the org to be creative, get stuff done, collaborate, and be silly.

In previous roles, Adrienne has worked in product management and email marketing.

Lauren Liao | Director, Strategy & Ops, Design & Research Lead at Twitter

In this role, Lauren is responsible for shaping the vision the Design & Research team and making it real, building and managing the first design and research ops team, fostering strong team culture, and raising the profile of the Twitter Design & Research brand internally as well as externally.

Prior to joining Twitter in June 2018, she was a Global Principal at Wolff Olins where she served as Head of Strategy of the SF office.

Right now, Lauren is having a lot of fun working with her team to design the optimal conditions for the Twitter Design & Research team to hum. As an Aries who wants to get everything done by yesterday, what's top of mind for her in 2019 is patience and pacing.
