"(CRITICS' PICK!) Structured much like the triangle from which it takes its name, SCALENE opens with a scene so volcanic and mystifying that we are immediately ensnared. From there, this disturbingly clever drama divulges its secrets through serial flashbacks and multiple points of view, edging forward, then backing up in repetitive hiccups... Working flawlessly—and, in one case, silently—the three leads sell every scene, but Ms. Martindale tears through the film like a homely avenger. If Oscar ever deigned to glance outside the multiplex, Meryl Streep would be toast."
- Jeannette Catsoulis, THE NEW YORK TIMES (Jan. 19, 2012)
"In SCALENE, the third feature from Indiana native Zack Parker, suburban intrigue is broken into a puzzle whose pieces refuse a perfect fit... Strong performances and a Hitchcock-trained eye build unnerving tension."
- Michelle Orange, THE VILLAGE VOICE (Jan. 18, 2012)
"Carefully crafted and impressively thesped, particularly by Margo Martindale, Zack Parker's ambitious, self-styled thriller channels a wide spectrum of high-concept classics, from RASHOMON to MEMENTO."
- Ronnie Scheib, VARIETY (Jan. 18, 2012)
"As structurally ambitious as any American film likely to be released this year, Zack Parker's SCALENE invests its dark, three pronged tale of motherly derangement and quiet desperation with enough low key Midwestern despair to power half a dozen regional indie forays into needy, abusive motherhood. A real find."
- Brandon Harris, FILMMAKER MAGAZINE
"(TOP 10 FILMS OF 2011.) One of the best indie movies that I've seen not only this year, but maybe ever."
- Brian Morton, ROGUE CINEMA
WATCH THE TRAILER:
SCALENE is a dark perceptual thriller starring 2011 Emmy winner Margo Martindale ("JUSTIFIED," MILLION DOLLAR BABY), Adam Scarimbolo (STAKE LAND, A GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS) and Hanna Hall (FORREST GUMP, THE VIRGIN SUICIDES). Winner of the Grand Jury Award at the Dance With Films festival, director Zack Parker's provocative third feature makes its NYC theatrical premiere with a week-long run, January 20 - 26.
Trickily told from three points of view, SCALENE revolves around a mother's revenge (Martindale) after her mentally challenged, twenty-something son (Scarimbolo) is accused of a sexual assault by his student caretaker (Hall). Bolstered by top-notch performances, a unique dramatic structure and unforeseen twists, the film has been called "gripping, real and unforgettable" by Ain't It Cool News.
