SCADFILM Presents The Art of the Fight Scene
Event Information
About this Event
Whether your action scene involves complex sword play or strategically choreographed martial arts, fight movement contributes to your story and has a major impact on the success of your project. A well-crafted action scene can not only be that exciting setpiece that makes your film or show worth talking about, it can also reveal truths about your characters and convey volumes of information to your audience.
Begin this action-packed weekend with the Oscar-winning film 'Rocky' on Friday night. On Saturday, join SCAD for a screenwriting workshop on polishing the perfect physical action scene. Then learn how to take the scene from page to screen with a fight choreography demonstration featuring performers from 'Black Panther', 'Jurassic Park', and 'The Avengers'. Watch how it all comes together with a screening of Creed.
THE LEGACY SERIES: ROCKY
Friday, November 15 | 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
SCADSHOW
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a small-time boxer from working-class Philadelphia, is arbitrarily chosen to take on the reigning world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), when the undefeated fighter's scheduled opponent is injured. While training with feisty former bantamweight contender Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith), Rocky tentatively begins a relationship with Adrian (Talia Shire), the wallflower sister of his meat-packer pal Paulie (Burt Young).
WRITING FOR FIGHTING WORKSHOP
Saturday, November 16 | 10:30 am to 1 2:30 pm
SCAD Atlanta Digital Media Center
Take your action concept from idea to page with this 'writing for fighting' workshop with veteran screenwriter, Michael Ferris and SCAD Professor of Dramatic Writing, Dan Rosen. Learn to develop the style, environment, stakes and story that makes your fight sequence unique to the movie you are writing. Michael Ferris has been writing for film and television since the 1990s, when he began writing on low-budget horror, action, and martial arts movies with former partner John Brancato. Ferris's credits include the David Fincher film, "The Net," "Terminator 3, and Steven Speilberg's TV series, "The Others," among many other television and film titles.
FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHY DEMO AND WORKSHOP
Saturday, November 16 | 1:30 pm to be a 3:30 pm
SCAD Atlanta Digital Media Center
Taking the fight scene from the page to the screen requires directors, writers, actors, and stunt choreographers to work seamlessly together. Filmmakers around the world turn to On Camera Combatives to implement their universal system of movement to create the most authentic and dynamic action performances possible. Lead choreographer, founder and director, Ryan Monolopolus, will describe how to use a uniform language between actors, choreographers and filmmakers for any action related film, television, animation, gaming and other media. This intensive two-hour workshop will give you the tools and know-how to effectively build, direct and shoot physical action scenes for any project.
SCREENING OF THE ACADEMY AWARD-NOMINATED FILM, 'CREED'
Saturday, November 16 | 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm
SCAD Atlanta Digital Media Center
Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) never knew his famous father, boxing champion Apollo Creed, who died before Adonis was born. However, boxing is in his blood, so he seeks out Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and asks the retired champ to be his trainer. Rocky sees much of Apollo in Adonis, and agrees to mentor him, even as he battles an opponent deadlier than any in the ring. With Rocky's help, Adonis soon gets a title shot, but whether he has the true heart of a fighter remains to be seen.
