SCA Earth Day in NYC
Event Information
Description
This April, the Student Conservation Association (SCA) is hosting 60 projects for Earth Day in honor of 60 years of SCA!
With national support from Southwest Airlines and American Express, we are aiming to connect our members, alumni, friends, and partners across the country to create a nationwide network of Earth Month celebrations.
Join SCA, the Natural Areas Conservancy (NAC), and NYC Parks to help restore the spectacular trails of Inwood Hill Park. The park contains some of Manhattan's last remaining old growth forest and natural salt marsh, along with unique geological formations, historic trails and stonework built by the WPA, and the site where (according to legend) the island of Manhattan was "purchased" from the Lenape by the Dutch East India Company. Volunteers will help to reduce erosion by clearing stone drainage culverts along Inwood Hill Park's trail network.
WHEN: Saturday, April 21st, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Breakfast & check-in at 9:00 am, kick-off at 9:30 am.
WHERE: Inwood Hill Park, New York, NY 10452. Enter park at Seaman Ave & Isham St (40°52'11.6"N 73°55'15.5"W) and look for SCA leaders directing volunteers toward the Gaelic Field where kickoff will take place.
Volunteers are encouraged to use public transit. Take the A train to 207th and walk two blocks to the park entrance. If coming by car, please be aware that no private vehicles are allowed inside the park and volunteers will need to find public street parking.
WHAT: Volunteers will help to restore Inwood's spectacular network of trails by clearing historic stone drainage culverts to reduce erosion and improve stormwater management. Volunteers will also help to cut back invasive vines, rake leaves, and clear fallen branches and debris from the trails.
WHO: Groups, families, and volunteers of all ages are welcome! Projects are appropriate for all ability levels.
BRING WITH YOU: Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. The event will take place rain or shine so please dress for the weather!
PROVIDED: SCA will supply breakfast and coffee for volunteers as well as work gloves and all project supplies. Volunteers will also receive SCA ConSERVE t-shirts.
