Please join the Student Conservation Association (SCA) and the Mayor of East Chicago in planting 50 native trees in East Chicago on Friday, April 26th!

Planting will take place at Marktown Park in East Chicago, IN! Trees will be planted in celebration of Arbor Day!


WHEN: Friday, April 26th, 8:30 am to 2 PM. Registration beginning at 9:30 am, kick-off at 10:00 am.

8:30 AM-10:00 AM: Take a walking tour of the Marktown Historic District and learn about the history of this most unique community. The Marktown Preservation Society will open a private home at 405 Prospect Street from 8:30 to 9:00 AM after which, Paul Myers, founder of the Marktown Preservation Society will conduct a walking tour of the neighborhood. The walking tour will end prior to the 10:00 AM kickoff at the Marktown Community Center.

10:00 AM- 2:00 PM: The planting ceremony begins at 10 am with words from Mayor Anthony Copeland and the tree planting demonstration. The ceremony will take place behind the Recreation Center. Afterward, we will split into groups and plant trees in designated locations in Marktown Park. Come by for as long as you like!

WHERE: Marktown Park is located near 3509 Spruce St. in East Chicago, IN 46312. Parking will be available along Broad St. and Pine Ave. as well as within the neighborhood. Please stop by the check-in table near the recreation center when you arrive. Look for the Student Conservation Association work truck and trailer as well as the blue pop up tent!

WHAT: Volunteers will plant, mulch, and water native trees.

WHAT TO BRING: Planting will take place rain or shine! Please dress for the weather. Plan to wear sturdy and close-toed shoes! All tools, gloves, and instruction will be provided. Light snacks and refreshments will follow the planting.

PROVIDED: All project supplies (tools, gloves, etc.) are provided. Drinking water will be available throughout the event.
