Event Showcases Federal Programs to Start and Grow a Business

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Alaska District Office – together with U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development and other local partners – have teamed up for Rural Strong Alaska, an initiative to spur economic development across Alaska. Attend this event in Kenai, Alaska to connect with the following tools and resources:

  • SBA funding programs and USDA loan and grant programs
  • Benefits of doing business with the federal government

  • How to start a business and obtain mentors/counselors

  • Success stories told by local small businesses

  • Opportunity to meet with SBA lenders, resource partners, and other small businesses

There will be information tables with representatives from the SBA, USDA and small business mentors/counselors who will be available to answer your questions one-on-one.

Who Should Attend: Anyone interested in starting, growing, or expanding their small business or interested in learning more about SBA & USDA programs & services

The Purpose: To establish rural sustainability and economic growth for generations

Opportunity: To meet with lenders that provide SBA guaranty loans (purchase and/or expand a business, equipment financing, working capital, etc.); learn how to do business with the federal government; free counseling and training; and network.

Discussions on the resources and solutions to the common roadblocks entrepreneurs face that the SBA has available from access to capital to revenues from federal contracts. Overview of the SBA Rural Strong initiative and Opportunity Zone program -- both to assist rural Alaska entrepreneurs and businesses start, grow, and expand to stimulate the economy and job creation. SBA & USDA teamed up to empower rural Alaska.

11:00 am: Access to Capital: SBA Funding Programs & USDA Loan and Grant Programs

Presenters: Nelida Irvine (SBA), Renee Johnson (USDA)

SBA and USDA will provide an overview of funding programs available and USDA grant programs. For small business owners and entrepreneurs who cannot get traditional forms of credit, an SBA-guaranteed loan can fill that need. From purchasing real estate, equipment, or inventory and working capital to refinance business debt or purchase an existing small business, there are different types SBA loans available. The SBA Disaster Loan Program and Surety Bond will also be covered. The Business and industry Loan Guarantee Program is administered by the USDA Rural Development, Rural Business and Cooperative Program Division. The primary purpose is to create and maintain employment and improve the economic and environmental climate in rural communities.

An overview of SBA’s Small Business Programs—HUBZone, Women-Owned, Veteran-Owned, and the 8(a) program—eligibility requirements and benefits. The U.S. government is the largest single purchaser of goods and services in the world. Every year it awards more than $500 billion dollars in contracts. Of those contracts, the federal government must set aside 23 percent for small businesses. Learn about federal agencies in Alaska and what are they procuring plus where to find these opportunities.
