#SayHerName 6th Anniversary: An Evening of Remembrance
Event Information
About this event
Join us on December 14th @ 7:00 p.m. EST for #SayHerName 6th Anniversary: A Night of Remembrance, as we honor the work of the #SayHerName Campaign over the past six years.
This year is the first year we will hold the ceremony virtually. The evening will include an introduction from AAPF Executive Director Kimberlé Crenshaw, words from members of our Mothers Network, music, spoken word, and a ritual honoring the lives and legacies of Black women, girls, and femmes killed by police.
We hold this space to bear witness. We hold this time to honor the families of Black women, girls, and femmes killed at the hands of police violence. We hold this moment to explore healing through art and ritual.
Join us in the fight to create a gender-inclusive racial justice movement and to continue to make visible the often invisible violence faced by Black women, girls, and femmes.
About AAPF and the #SayHerName Campaign
The African American Policy Forum (AAPF) is a social justice think tank that strives to promote social justice reform by bridging the gap between scholarly research and community activism. They bring together academics, artists, and activists to promote frameworks and strategies that address a vision of racial justice that embraces the intersections of race, gender, class, and the array of barriers that disempower those who are marginalized in society. AAPF, alongside the Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies, founded the #SayHerName campaign in December 2014 to elevate the names and stories of Black women, girls, and femmes who have been victims of police violence and provide support for their families. From this support grew the #SayHerName Mothers Network, a community of mothers and family members of Black women, girls, and femmes killed by police. The mission of the Mothers Network is to provide support to other mothers and families who have been victimized by racist police violence and to bring about reforms in social, judicial and law enforcement practices that can ensure humane, just and empathetic change in communities across the nation. Similar to movements for social and restorative justice from around the world, this network of Mothers and families has turned grief into activism while providing a model for social movements that are currently searching for sustainable approaches to advocacy and reform.
