Event description

Description

This Food Safety Training for Ohio growers is a two day training.

Dates: Tuesday, January 30th 8:30am-4:00pm and Wednesday, January 31st 8:30am-4:00pm

Tickets are $75 per farm. Each farm may bring 2-3 people from the farm. This includes refreshments and a catered lunch for both days.

Purpose of this training:

This curriculum has been specifically designed to provide a foundation of Good Agricultural Practices
knowledge that includes emphasis on co-management of food safety and environmental management
goals, while outlining the requirements in the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety
Rule. The farming environment naturally has many microbial risks, so to protect the fruits and
vegetables that are grown and packed on the farm, every grower needs to know how to identify and
reduce risks. In addition, buyer demand for food safety practices and the first ever regulation of fresh
produce outlined in the FSMA Produce Safety Rule make knowledge about produce safety important to
overall farm viability.

The PSA Grower Training Course is one way to satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement that
requires “At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed
food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as
adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.”

After attending the entire course, participants will be eligible to receive a certificate from the
Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) that verifies they have completed the training course. To
receive an AFDO certificate, a participant must be present for the entire training.

This two-day course will include classroom instruction covering the seven modules of the Produce Safety
Alliance Grower Training manual along with exercises and activities designed to make the material
understandable and accessible. There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion and sharing of
knowledge within the group. Participants will receive templates of the elements of a Farm Food Safety
Plan and will begin to develop their plan together during the course. Each farm will receive a full copy of
the course manual and lists of available resources.
