Please Save the Date for this special event!
We are thrilled to be bringing the documentary film, Raising Bertie to Bertie County for two FREE public screenings on Saturday, December 10th at the Bertie Public High School Auditorium. After the second screening, we will also have a BBQ for the community at the High School.
This event, the first public screening in the area, is brought to you by the Bertie County Board of Commissioners and the Bertie Public High School, with support from Perdue, Self-Help Credit Union, The NC Rural Center and the NC Community Development Initiative. We hope it will be a chance for the community to come together, watch the film and talk about issues that are important to Bertie County and the surrounding area.
We are still pulling together final details and will update everyone as these come together. In the meantime, please save the date and share this event! We've created a Facebook event page to help get the word out! Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/events/415190772201801/
We hope you will join us on this special day!
All the best to you and yours,
Team Raising Bertie
About the film:
Raising Bertie is the award-winning intimate, six-year portrait of three young African American men coming-of-age in North Carolina’s rural Bertie County. Raising Bertie movingly interconnects narratives of family, youthful innocence, systemic racism, educational inequity, poverty and unemployment, and the will to succeed in the face of formidable odds. The film puts a face, a name, and a story to a generation of overlooked and under resourced rural youth while expanding current narratives about young African American men.
"Brilliantly weaves the young men’s stories together, as they transition from their teens into manhood, engaged in a shared struggle for social and economic survival." — Brian C. Bush, Huffington Post Black Voices
"Riveting...after spending two hours with these remarkable people and gaining an understanding of their plight, it renews your faith in the human spirit." — Al Alexander, The Patriot Ledger
"In a time when political dysfunction, farcical pop culture recaps and kitten videos seems to capture and hold the media and nation’s attention, Raising Bertie fills a tremendous void. Through careful, long-form visual storytelling Raising Bertie artfully explores larger problems plaguing the South... Every state legislator, every high school student and dammit, every citizen who cares about the state needs to watch Raising Bertie." — Sandra Davidson, Bit & Grain
"Astounding and powerful." — Bryn Gelbart, Indiewire
