Description

TICKETS

$15 at the door, $12 advance.

Kids under 12 are free. Teachers, too. And bands that have played for us or will be playing for us. :)

THE SHOW

This is the sixteenth in a series of fundraising concerts organized to pay for the underfunded music education program at Castelar Elementary School. Established in 1882 and sitting right in the middle of Chinatown, the inner-city public school serves mostly immigrant kids who don't get much exposure to performing arts or creative outlets. Chinatown has an unbeatable musical past (mostly punk) and rad art scene in the present (post punk). Neither subculture crosses paths often with the residents in Chinatown but we're trying to create a bridge for them to help out the local kids.

Previous shows have included Adolescents, Alley Cats, Alice Bag, PHAG (Phranc and Alice Bag), Channel 3, The Crowd, The Gears, Rikk Agnew Band, Chuck Dukowski Sextet, Mike Watt (wth the Missingmen and Secondmen, Hector Penalosa (with My Revenge and Baja Bugs), Bob Forrest (solo and with the Bicycle Thief), Midget Oddjob (with Keith Morris), California, Sean Wheeler & Zander Schloss (and Zander solo), Money Mark, Dengue Fever, Carsick Cars, Birdstriking, Chui Wan, Neptunas, Bad Cop/Bad Cop, Upset, Rachel Haden, Rough Kids... A real mix of original L.A. punks and underground bands that carry on the tradition.

This lineup will mix up old and new friends and overlapping generations of Los Angeles punk with a cowpunk and roots flavor.

Phranc played for us as part of the PHAG duo with Alice Bag last year, and is returning for a special solo set of old and new favorites. We are honored to have the All-American Jewish Lesbian Folksinger and institution of LA punk on our side.
• The return of Ford Madox Ford featuring Chip Kinman from The Dils, Rank & File, Blackbird, and Cowboy Nation with his kickass blues punk combo.
• A rare appearance by post-Gun Club roots rockers The Horseheads, featuring Mike Martt, Gregory Boaz a.k.a. Smog, Billy Burks, and Brock Avery.
LP3 & The Tragedy carrying on the roots punk tradition of Los Lobos, X, and The Blasters, and supporting Save Music in Chinatown since the beginning.
• The LInda Lindas (Eloise, Bela, Lucia, and Mila) featuring a certain Castelar student who has been inspiring and attending our shows and making flyers since she was in Kindergarten, providing guest vocals for the last year or two, and is finally ready to play a set with her band.

That's a lot of cool music for 12 lousy bucks (and maybe some raffle tickets).
