Volcanoes and Mercury Mines – in Clayton? Come learn about unique geology and mercury mining on Mt. Diablo. After a short talk about human impacts to the Watershed, the hike will continue up Perkins Canyon in Mount Diablo State Park. This 3 mile, 350 foot elevation gain loop hike offers opportunities to see rare plants, great views, and fascinating geology, not to mention an amazing creek. Be sure to bring plenty of water, a snack, and dress in layers. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots recommended.
Meet: State Park parking area off Morgan Territory Rd, 1/10 of mile from the intersection of Marsh Creek Rd. and Morgan Territory Rd.
Directions: From I-680 North or downtown Walnut Creek head east on Ygnacio Valley Rd., continue on Ygnacio Valley Rd. for about 7 miles. Make a right onto Clayton Rd. and continue on Clayton Rd for 2.5 miles. Continue onto Marsh Creek Rd for 3.4 miles and then make a slight right onto Morgan Territory Rd. Parking will be on the right.
