Description

This is a FREE training opportunity open to clergy of all faiths and lay leaders in local congregations interested in Veteran related issues. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Resources will also be given to help you reach Veterans in your church and community. Training limited to first 50 registrations.

Training Objectives:

Morning Session: “Pastoral Care for Veterans and their Families.” This session involves a discussion of the fundamentals of Pastoral Care with attention given to the definition of “Spirituality” in relation to the development of meaning and purpose in life. Special emphasis is placed upon the significance of listening to the unique story of each Veteran. The Veteran’s Past, Present, and Future story is explored to facilitate better understanding of the Veteran’s spiritual distress and spiritual care needs. The session concludes with a discussion of the roles of clergy in the care of Service Members, Veterans and their families, including pastoral responses and resources.

Afternoon Session: “Operation S.A.V.E” Veteran suicide is the number 1 clinical priority with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Operation S.A.V.E. is a one- to two-hour gatekeeper training program provided by VA suicide prevention coordinators to veterans and those who serve veterans. Optional role-playing exercises are included. Operation S.A.V.E consists of the following five components:

1. Brief overview of suicide in the veteran population
