About this event

About Kamara Thomas:

KAMARA THOMAS is a singer, songspeller, mythology fanatic, and multidisciplinary storyteller based in Durham, NC. Her storytelling for film and stage is multi-faceted— weaving together musical and theatre performance, community art-making, ritual, and visual elements including masks, archival material, and photography.

Kamara also spearheads Country Soul Songbook, a creative community and online platform featuring performances, interviews, conversations, and cultural offerings rooted in the mission to amplify historically marginalized voices in Country and Americana. In 2020 CSSB launched their first (virtual) Summit— four days and 35 hours of content featuring 65 BIPOC and LGBTQ2IA creatives leading the conversation around equity in American roots music.

In 2021 Kamara will release “Tularosa: An American Dreamtime”, a song-cycle exploring the mythology of the American West. She is currently developing a companion storytelling work with Denver theatre company Band of Toughs. Her film "Oh Gallows" incorporated experimental vocal work, dance, theatre, and photography. “Soapbox”, a series of traveling performances for public spaces in downtown Durham, featured a multi-generational cast drawn from the local community. Performance material from “Soapbox” was further developed into “Good Luck America”, a music video which was featured at the 2019 Hayti Heritage Film Festival.

As a songwriter and musician, Kamara spent over a decade in New York fronting numerous bands and touring internationally with hard rock trio Earl Greyhound. She also founded Honky Tonk Happy Hour, a seminal cult favorite of the early-aughts NYC alt-country scene.

Kamara has been a featured artist for Lincoln Center Education's repertory season and a resident at Yaddo artist colony. She was named one of the “14 Artists Proving Black Americana is Real” by Paste Magazine. She has been commissioned for work by Cassilhaus, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina, and has been a guest speaker at Duke, Princeton, and Indiana Universities.

About Loamlands:

Loamlands is a distorted country music outfit based in North Carolina that places queer storytelling at the forefront. Their music intimately grapples with identity, pronouns and experiencing a queer existence in both modern-day and historical southern culture.
