Course Descriptions

Grades K-2 - Making Opinion Writing Fun

Using the right mentor text, in particular one that most teachers have in their classroom library already, can make opinion writing fun. I will show how you tie math into the lesson as well.

Lisa Rivera, SJAWP Teacher Consultant, teaches 1st grade at Kathryn Hughes Elementary School in Santa Clara Unified School District..

Grades 3-5 - Collaborative Composing

When students write with other students, deeper, richer ideas can emerge, take root, and grow into inspired drafts. Creatively collaborate with students and add something new to your writing workshop toolkit. Students: Come write with us and gain insight into your writing by listening to and sharing it with others. Bring a draft with you, or flash draft something here!

Aeriale Johnson, SJAWP Fellow, spends her days learning from children at Washington Elementary School in San José. She holds a National Board Certification in Early/Middle Childhood Literacy.

Grades 6-7 - Meaningful Dialogue and its Role in Effective Writing

In this workshop, we will engage in meaningful dialogue as we explore and discuss mentor texts, a way to elevate our own narrative writing.

Jacqueline Goodwin, SJAWP Teacher Consultant, teaches middle school at Renaissance Academy at Fischer in the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District.

Grades 8-12 - Verse University

In this workshop, instructors and students will learn to utilize skills that apply to both poetry and prose. This will help instructors teach writing across multiple genres, especially personal statements and college application essays, and it will allow students to build bridges from personal writing to academic writing.

Raven Sisco, SJAWP Teacher Consultant, teaches English and Advanced Creative Writing at Mt. Pleasant High School in East Side Union High School District.
