About this event

Boat transportation to Thacher Island off the coast of the charming seacoast village of Rockport, Massachusetts. Explore the Cape Ann Light Station Lighthouses listed on the National Historic Register. The Thacher Island Twin Lights were established in 1771 then replaced by the granite structures of today in 1861. Climb the South Tower for awesome views of Cape Ann. Fabulous up close bird watching. Tickets are required in advance.

Members of the Thacher Island Association receive free boat tickets to either island, so become a member before you buy tickets. Buy a membership at https://thacherisland.org/join-us and boat tickets at https://eventbrite.com.

  • Patron ($150) members get 6 tickets
  • Life ($500) and Family ($60) members get 4 tickets
  • Individual members ($30) get 2 tickets

Note: Trips can be cancelled due to curfew or weather. If you use a membership to get tickets and the trip is cancelled, the membership fee will not be refunded. If you purchase the tickets and the trip is cancelled, you will receive a refund.


Note: All visitors must have a mask or face coverings at all times on their person, to put over nose and mouth when approaching within 6 feet of another person on the island (except those in their immediate Covid bubble.) Passengers must wear a mask or face covering while on the boat . The boat crew will also wear a mask.

Visitors will be allowed to climb the South Tower Lighthouse. Sanitizer will be available as all visitors must sanitize their hands before entering tower. Entry will be limited to groups of 4 – 6 visitors at a time.

Do I have to buy tickets in advance and where can I buy them?

Yes, tickets must be purchased in advance and can only be purchased on this website. Please scroll all the way down on the ticket menu to choose the correct ticket.

Each person, including children, MUST have their own ticket with their name on it.

Is it important to provide passenger names when I purchase tickets?

Yes, this if very important, the name on each ticket must be unique. Tickets will be checked by the boat captain.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Children must be at least 3 years of age. Children under 12 years of age require an Adult Sponsor for every 5 children to travel to the island with them.

Why is contact information such as email and mobile phone so important ?

In the event boat trips are cancelled for weather or rough seas, this will be the only way to notify passengers. Cancellations typically occur within 24 hours of departure. Mobile phone and email information can be the same for passengers in a group.

Why must I create an account on Eventbrite to order tickets?

Additional security is important for events which require credit card information. Unless you sign out, Eventbrite will recognize you when you return to the website.

Do I have to sign the waiver of liability to order tickets?

Yes, the waiver of liability is required to order tickets.

Is the ticket a round trip ticket and how long is the overall experience?

Your ticket is round trip. Time on the island is 1 1/2 hours, overall experience with travel time is about 2 1/2 hours.

What are my transportation options for getting to and from the event?

Launch leaves from the Thacher boat launch at the Town dock (T-Wharf) next to the Sandy Bay Yacht Club.

For driving directions enter a destination of "Sandy Bay Yacht Club" on T-Wharf. Note that T-Wharf is NOT Tuna Wharf, which is a different location in Rockport.

Parking Options

There is meter free parking on Norwood and Atlantic Avenues two streets up from T-Wharf. There is limited parking on T-Wharf for non-residents on the right hand side. Two handicap parking spaces on T-Wharf are available on the nonresident side with a handicap placard on display in the vehicle.

What should I bring to the event?

Face mask/covering, drinking water, sunscreen, jacket and bug spray. Sandals are not recommended for climbing the tower and walking the trails.

Life jackets are provided and must be worn on the boat.

Please leave your pets at home. Great place for a picnic, bird watching or picture taking. It is an active gull nesting location, so a head covering can be useful.

Are services available on the island?

There is a composting toilet and picnic tables. Thacher Island merchandise can be purchased from the keepers (TIA staff on the island). No food or beverages are available for purchase on the island.

For questions and special needs, call 617-599-2590 daily from 9AM to 5PM. Leave your name and phone number and your call will be returned.

What's the refund policy?

The launch fee will be reimbursed if the trip is cancelled due to weather or rough seas. Weather cancellations are within 24 hours of departure, so watch email or listen for a phone call.

All passengers, including Rockport residents and paid up Thacher Island Association members, will be required to pay a launch fee if they cancel their reservation less than one week (7 Days) prior to departure or are no-shows. Note: The late cancellation/no-show fee will be $30 for adults and $10 for children under 12 for all passengers.

How to cancel: Service Fees will be refunded provided cancellation is greater than 7 days before departure. Go to the Eventbrite web site on your ticket confirmation by clicking "View and Manage" your order. (You will need to log in to your Eventbrite account.) If trips are cancelled by Thacher Island Association for weather, the 7 day refund policy is waived for all paid tickets for that trip.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes, the boat captain will check your ticket to match the boat manifest.

Can I update my registration information?

Yes, log into the Eventbrite site and click on "View and Manage" your order. Verify the passenger names are correct.

Please make sure the emergency contact/phone number is the most current. Please make sure your email is correct and is an email which you check frequently. (This is the only way to contact you if there is a weather cancellation which would occur within 24 hours of departure time.)

Is my registration fee or ticket transferable?

NO, you may not transfer your tickets to another party and you may not transfer your tickets to a different event.

Is it okay if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

NO, the name on the ticket must match the passenger who is attending. The boat captain will have a manifest with all passengers names. The ticket buyer can change this registration by returning to this web site.

The Thacher Island Association (TIA) was established in 1981 by the Thacher Straitsmouth Islands Town Committee (TSITC) as a non-profit group dedicated to raising funds for the restoration and on-going maintenance of Thacher and Straitsmouth Islands. On Thacher Island, the Town of Rockport owns the southern end of the Island and manages it via the TSITC and TIA. The northern end is owned by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (U.S.F&WS) and is managed by the Town under an agreement with U.S.F&WS. On Straitsmouth Island, the Town of Rockport owns the northern end of the island and manages it via the TSITC and TIA. The southern end is owned by Mass Audubon Society (MAS) and is managed by the Town under an agreement with MAS.
