Event description
Poetry performance and book signing with Sara Minges and Special Guest Shawn Pavey.

About this Event

Our Daily Nada, formerly known as The Flying Saucer, is the birthplace of Sara Minges’s first open mic performance, circa 2008. She's loved poems and writing back when poetry wasn't cool! Believing her poems were not meant for public consumption, she hid her poems under lock and key for over 20 years, until a friend encouraged her to perform in front of strangers.

11 years later, Sara Minges is a 2019 Pitch Best Poet Award Nominee, touring poet and "girl on fire", performing in Ohio, Minneapolis, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois with upcoming performances in Nashville and St. Louis. Her first full length book of poetry, Naked Toes (Chameleon Press, 2018)is full of "sweet 'n sassy" poems, exploring themes of vulnerability, love, surviving heartbreak and having the courage to love the person you are, not the person others expect you to be. Naked Toes Second Edition, released in 2019 (Toledo, OH) includes 13 additional poems exploring suicide survivorship, loss of her beloved cat Cleo, growing up with a parent with a mental illness and living with chronic pain.

She's also a Founding Board Member of Jump Start Art, a nonprofit connecting emerging artists with community resources and Founder of Wonder Woman Rising, an organization empowering women to let go of shame and reclaim their power by owning and embracing their personal stories.

Shawn Pavey has delivered newspapers, mowed lawns, bagged groceries, cut meat, laid sewer pipe, bussed tables, washed dishes, roofed houses, crunched numbers, rented cars, worked in hotels, worn an apron at Kinko’s, and been paid to write everything from résumés to music reviews. Currently, he earns a living as an Executive Recruiter in Mission, KS where he lives with his wife and two worthless but adorable cats. He is the author of Talking to Shadows (2008, Main Street Rag Press) and Nobody Steals the Towels from a Motel 6 (2015, Spartan Press), Co-founder and former Associate Editor of The Main Street Rag Literary Journal, and a former board member and officer of The Writers Place, a Kansas City-based literary non-profit. His poems, essays, and journalism appear in a variety of national and regional publications. He’s hosted poetry readings in bars, coffee shops, haunted houses, bookstores, libraries, front porches, seedy motel rooms, and abandoned warehouses. A graduate of the University of North Carolina’s Undergraduate Honors Creative Writing Program, he likes his Tom Waits loud, his bourbon single-barrel, and his basketball Carolina Blue.
