The Second Annual Spectacular Santa Barbara Pie Contest
- a sampling of the world’s most sensational sweets and savories!!
Be a part of Santa Barbara history in the making! The contest will begin at 3pm sharp on Saturday, December 3 at Potek Winery. All proceeds of the event will go to the Santa Barbara Transition House, a non-profit dedicated to helping homeless families. Judging will take place from 3-3:30, followed by merry making, pie eating, cocktail sipping, and socializing. The entrants are required to register here by Friday, November 25 and must bring two pies (of the same design); one for official tasting, the other to be enjoyed by guests. Entrants must arrive with their two pies between 2:30 and 3pm in order to qualify for the 3 o'clock judgement. Guests may arrive any time - pie eating will begin at 3ish, as our judges are tasting -- guests will be tasting as well. Winners will be crowned at 4-4:30. Purchasing your ticket here is your registration.
The judges will taste and score using a highly scientific rating card, giving entrants a number from 1-10 rating crust, filling and overall presentation/creativity. Pies will be assigned a number and presented anonomously, to ensure complete objectivity. Guests who do not have a pie to enter, but would like to join the festivities (and taste the spoils!) are encouraged to donate $15 at the door. Registration closes at midnight on Friday November 25, so enter now to secure your shot at everlasting glory!
A note to entrants: If you are planning to stay through the judging & award portions of the event, you can plan on bringing home your pie dishes - no need for disposables!

WHAT IS A PIE?
We define a pie as a confection with a bottom crust, a filling and sometimes a top crust. A pie is made from scratch. A tart is not really a pie, but the line is a blurry one, and we celebrate all forms!
- A pajama, robe and boots (COZY PIE EATING FASHION!!) by UGG
- Gift cards to local restaurants (got to have a nice meal before tucking into holiday pies!)
- Small town fame of the greatest kind
- much much more, stay tuned for updates!
THE JUDGING PANEL:
Mike Orlando - yes folks -- The man behind Twenty-Four Blackbirds Chocolate is on the pie judge panel this year. Mike has a background in Science and will use his lazer sharp palatte to detect the best of the best in pie madness.
Elizabeth Colling is an acclaimed pastry chef and former food stylist at Martha Stewart Magazine. She's our resident expert in the field of pie making, she'll be looking for the flakiest of crusts (no soggy bottoms!), creative vision and most elegant balance of flavors.
Ayda Robana, food stylist, recipe developer and caterer, will be joining us with her worldly aesthetic and effusive pie energy. She's been known to win food contests herself, taking home the prize for Best Bolognese last year at Sama Sama. Look out for her highest of high standards!
Jody Thomas, has been a long time baker and has the serious edge on homemade pies, ciders, making fires, family traditions, and hot chocolate making (the woman drinks a perfect cup each morning in lieu of coffee or tea!). She's on the line when you need help with your pie.
Potek wine is the perfect accompaniment to a slice of pie, staff can recommend a varietal to go with your favorite piece. Hot Apple Cider and sparkling water will be available as well.
Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
We encourage pie enthusiasts of all ages to enter! 1 entry (consisting of two of the same pie) per person. We even have a junior division this year of entrants 13 and under, so get your kids in the kitchen! You don't need an ID when you bring your pie for judging, we will check you in immediately and get your pie to the people.
There is a small parking lot behind Potek, and street parking available on Haley st, as well as the rest of the funk zone neighborhood.
Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
