Description


This is a 2-hour guided tour experience by a radiation physicist or chemist or engineer at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station aka SONGS as it undergoes its decommissioning.

We will be walking about 2-miles uphill and downhill, up and down stairs, and outdoors.

This is strictly a walking tour to help SCOUTS (12-17 years old) understand the overall concepts of Nuclear Science.


This Tour is NOT REQUIRED for any Scout to attend to complete the requirements for the Nuclear Science Merit Badge.

This Tour meets Requirement #4 of the Bernard Harris Supernova Award - Technology In Energy.

(a) Arrange and go on a field trip to a site where you can learn about the innovative and/or historical examples of energy production. Possible sites include power plants, refineries, power generating stations...

(b) Analysis and report - create a report on your field trip and what you learned. Present and discuss with your Supernova mentor.

If your Scout is turning 18-years old before the tour date, he/she will need to bring government issued identification (driver’s License or passport) to check-in.

HOW TO RSVP:

1) Please sign up using SCOUT’s NAME with Parent's Email Address.

2) DO NOT RSVP ANY ADULTS on EVENTBRITE.

3) A form will be sent out under separate cover via the Eventbrite email platform for the rest of this information between 02/01/19 - 03/30/19.

EVERY PERSON'S (youth or adult) (a) Full Name as listed on official identification documentation - birth certificate, drivers license, state photo ID or passport, (b) country of citizenship, (c) date of birth, (d) Council and Troop if scout, (e) all adults’ driver’s license, and (f) LAST FOUR DIGITS OF EVERYONE's Social Security Number...for the US Department of Defense background check for all visitors to the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

4) Any adult who does not wish to volunteer to accompany their youth(s) on the tour do not have to fill out the form.

NOTES - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

1) REGISTRATION for any and all LA Lone Scouts’ events are a 2-part process for youth protection and privacy: (a) SignUp on Eventbrite, and (b) Complete the GoogleDoc Form URL sent via the Eventbrite email platform on a rolling basis.

2) PLEASE CHECK THE EMAIL ADDRESS YOU USE IN YOUR EVENTBRITE SIGNUP ON A REGULAR BASIS AS YOUR RESPONSE (ON YOUR YOUTH’s BEHALF) IS REQUIRED AT LEAST ONCE AND BEFORE MARCH 30, 2019.

3) BSA Scouts from ANY COUNCIL and any troop can sign up for this JUNE 29 San Onofre Scout Day as long as they will be at least 12-years-old by 06/30/2019. If your Scout will be 18 by 06/30/19, please provide his/her drivers license number for the background check + have him/her bring driver‘s license or passport on day of tour to check-in.

4) BSA Scouts must attend in their Class A Field Uniform.

5) This is a drop-off visit for SCOUTS from any council/troop. Each Troop can volunteer ONE ADULT as chaperone.

6) YOUTH must be at least 12 years old by JUNE 30, 2019 - no exceptions per the US Department of Defense security protocols.

7) Travel from wherever you are and SONGS in San Clemente (Camp Pendleton) is your responsibility.

8) Adults (21-70 years old) selected as chaperones must come with a Government issued photo ID (drivers license, state ID or passport) and wear long pants with closed toed and closed heeled shoes.

9) Scouts planning to work on completing the Bernard Harris Supernova Award by December 2019 are strongly encouraged to tour San Onofre for one of the two Supernova Activities for Requirement #4.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

  • YES - Everyone must be at least 12 years old by June 30, 2019.
  • YES - All ADULTS volunteering to be chaperones must be at least 21 years old and bring a government issued identification card (passport or drivers' license).
  • SCOUTS who will turn 18 by June 30, 2019 must bring passport or drivers license to check in.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

  • Travel from wherever you are and the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is your responsibility.

What can I bring into the event?

  • SCOUTS (12-18 years old) must attend in their BSA Class A Field Uniform.
  • ADULTS (21-100 years old) must wear long pants with closed toed and closed heeled shoes.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

  • NO - ALL VISITORS MUST BE LISTED ON THE SECURITY ROSTER.
  • This Security Roster will be sent via the Eventbrite Email Platform for all Eventbrite SignUps to enter each person's information as required and listed above in the HOW TO RSVP section.
  • Please check the email address you use in your Eventbrite signup process at regular intervals as your response is required at least once.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

  • NO - If your name and personal information is not listed on the Security Roster, you will not be allowed to tour - whether you are an adult or a minor.
  • The Security Roster will be sent via the Eventbrite Email Platform to all Eventbrite SignUps to enter their party's information as required by the US Department of Defense and listed above in the HOW TO RSVP section.
  • Please check the email address you use in your Eventbrite signup process on a regular basis this holiday season as your response is required at least once.

This June 29, 2019 tour date does not work for my BSA Scout. Do you have other dates?

  • NOT EXACTLY. The San Onofre has other dates: September 28, 2019 and December 4, 2019.

My student is not a BSA Scout. Can we still sign up?

  • LA Lone Scouts are registered directly with Western Los Angeles County Council (WLACC) of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).
  • No, this is Scout Day, designed for Scouts from the BSA (Boy Scouts of America), regardless of gender.
