About this event
In the early 1840s, San Francisco was nothing more than a sleepy port town occupied by less than 1,000 sailors, fishermen, whalers and fur trappers living in wood frame shacks around the waterfront. But only a year after gold was discovered in January of 1848, the city's population had ballooned to 25,000 people, making it the social, economic, and cultural center of the United States' West Coast virtually overnight. What were the forms of architecture and urbanism that took hold as the city grew, and how did it all change after the Great Earthquake of 1906 leveled the city? It's time to explore the history of San Francisco's architecture and its unique place in the story of American architecture.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series on the history of San Francisco architecture, where we'll examines the buildings and structures that have made San Francisco aesthetically unique among the great American cities. In Part Three — City by the Byte — we'll explore the city's current development as a glittering technological hub, along with its Second Bay Tradition, Mid-Century, and Late Modernist aesthetic.
Led by architectural historian David V. Griffin of Landmark Branding, this digital showcase featuring a selection of unique structures will include:
- A look at the Second Bay Tradition, which created an American alternative to the Bauhaus
- The coming of Brutalism and its influence on new landmarks such as the Transamerica Pyramid
- Urban Renewal and the dawning of San Francisco's preservation and Colorist movements
- The current crop of architectural projects in Silicon Valley and their data- driven clients
- An in-depth look at each building's construction, context, and current status, with a focus on how culture and innovation drive architectural symbolism
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with David — any and all questions about these unique buildings are welcomed and encouraged!
