Event description

STILL BUZZING FROM I/O? We are too! Come to Realm HQ for the May edition of the San Francisco Android Developers meetup for two awesome talks. Details below...

Talk 1: Tales from the dark side: developing SDKs at scale with Kenneth Geisshirt

Talk 2: Is Realm magic or sufficient advanced technology? with Makoto Yamazaki (Zaki)

Talk 1: Tales from the dark side: developing SDKs at scale

Description: We love Android because of its diversity, openness, and lack of central control. The openness gives us a highly competitive market with many vendors and a huge number of models. We see inexpensive phones with slow processors and little memory, and we see flagship phones with the highest performance chip makers can produce.

Today, Android is truly the world phone. When developing for Android, you have the world as your target audience. But the darker side of Android is that a quarter of all active Android devices are running Android 2.x or 4.x, and these devices haven’t seen an update for years.

Developing an app or a SDK for a global scale, you will from time to time be hit by mysterious bugs. Bugs which can only be reproduced on particular devices, bugs only users can reproduce, or bugs that disappear as soon as you start looking for them. With Realm being used in more than a billion app installs around the
world, we have experienced this first hand. This talk will take you through a horror show of some of the most obscure bugs we encountered, and not least how we found and fixed them. By understanding the root
cause of these bugs you will hopefully leave with a better understanding of the diverse eco-system Android is and with some tools and tricks for fixing bugs in your own app or SDK.

About Kenneth:
Kenneth joined Realm in 2012, and he has been working on all facets of a start-ups: prototyping language bindings, benchmarking, writing documentation, and providing support. For the last three years, he has primarily been hacking on Realm's Android products/projects. He has a background in scientific computing, and for the last two decades he has been working with web hosting, DNA fingerprinting, 4GL modernization, and medical imaging.

Talk 2: Is Realm magic or sufficient advanced technology?

Description: Realm provides lazy loading of data with super natural notation by using annotation processor and byte code transformer. In this talk, I will explain the details of what Realm's annotation processor and byte code transformer are doing in order to enable lazy loading. First, I'll talk about the old implementation which only uses annotation processor. Its strategy was simple, but had many limitations. Then I'll explain how we eliminated those limitations by using byte code manipulation.

About Makoto (Zaki):
Zaki started developing Android application eight years ago and joined Realm in 2015. In Realm, he worked as a member of Java team remotely from Japan and improved RealmObjects's proxy code which enabled magical lazy loading of the underlying data. He is also the CTO of a small company in Japan which develops Android/iOS applications for clients.

All our talks are recorded, so if you can't make it to the meetup you can still watch the talks online about two weeks afterwards. We'll email the videos to the group and post links in the event comments.
