Thanks to the rapidly expanding craft coffee industry in America, we're seeing a rapid influx of people attracted take up careers in the industry, specifically to becoming baristas. As this culture shift progresses, and the role of the barista shifts from being viewed as a "fill in" job, to a legitimate long term career, we're faced with the task of empowering baristas with the tools to map out a career path that takes them beyond a minimum wage job, onto a fulfilling, well thought out and legitimate career into the years ahead.

This workshop, designed for baristas (and those hoping to be baristas) only, is focused on unpacking what the role of the Barista is in todays rapidly evolving American craft coffee landscape. We'll go into detail about what a long term career spanning 10 years should look like if mapped with consideration.

The workshop will start with a general look at a 10 year barista career map, break it up into it's 3 distinct phases, and drill further into what the focuses during those 3 phases should be. Discussion will be aimed towards showing attendee how to tailor the map for their own career in order to move with forward with confidence as a legitimate coffee professional.

Together we'll explore the specific challenges facing everyone attending the workshop. We'll do this by looking at the data collected from a pre-workshop survey each attendee will be asked to complete online before they attend the workshop (results will be kept confidential).

The workshop will be run by Lee Safar, San Diego based Australian specialty coffee career barista of 15 years (Australia, USA and London) and long time entrepreneur (owner of Elixir Specialty Coffee).

"I've been mentoring baristas around the world for years and guarantee that you'll leave this workshop with the tools you'll need to start creating the clarity you need in your career, make choices that empower you, understand how to find the right employer for you, and gain confidence in what the next two years of your career should look like." - Lee Safar

Tickets limited to 40 seats. You will be emailed a survey ahead of the workshop.

This workshop will NOT go into coffee preparation techniques.

Please note: This workshop is focused on creating a safe space for baristas, or people wanting to become baristas, to share of their experiences and ask questions freely, without worrying about how those questions/comments may affect potential future job prospects. For this reason it is respectfully requested that cafe owners/operators do not purchase tickets as you will not be permitted to attend and tickets will not be refunded if you are asked to leave.

"As a new barista, this workshop truly put many things into perspective while considering what a career as a barista looks like. Lee not only gave us the resources and guidelines in order to build a foundation for our careers as baristas, she personally gave me a lot of confidence in my ability to dictate what my future looks like." K.S

"If you're looking to get into the nitty gritty of barista professionalism, Map It Forward is the most cut-the-bull-shit class you will ever take." N

"I was reminded at the Map it Forward workshop that the huge dreams I have as a coffee professional are not impossible. Despite the odds and naysayers. Sometimes you just need the push and that fire under your butt to make the dreams into reality." K.E

The Map It Forward workshop for the barista is definitely a piece of investment one should consider to further succeed in the coffee industry. Like doctors, teachers and even hairstylists; they constantly take workshops to further their education in their craft. It's an opportunity to network in your field and learn what is changing in the industry. I'm excited to see how this committed will continue to thrive as it moves forward. C.E

"I have been working in the coffee industry for a few years now. For the majority of my time I had always just been a Barista making drinks. From the start I knew I loved the industry; from the science behind coffee, the art, the culture, the people, everything. Ideally a career in coffee would be ideal for me but until recently I had no clue how to make that happen. I was not sure what my coffee career options were or how to get there. Thanks to Lee and the I Map It Forward workshop, I feel confident that with some time and effort I will find the coffee career that is right for me." JH

"Lee is a caffeinated wealth of wisdom who passionately brings her broad range of experiences to life through engaging stories and the occasional four letter word." A.N
