If you are looking for a chance to expand children's enthusiasm for learning, consider requesting a Children's Tour of the San Diego Central Library @ Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common!
The San Diego Central Library Children’s Tour is appropriate for kids ages 5-11 (Kindergarten through 5th grade), visiting the library as a group or class. Depending on your interest and the amount of time you would like to spend with us, your visit may include:
- a building tour led by specially-trained docents,
- highlights of special spaces in the library that specifically interest children;
- an introduction to the resources of the library by a Youth Services librarian;
- instruction on and help with conducting research;
- participation in a library program or special event;
- space for your group to have lunch/snack in the library Courtyard.
Please indicate which of the above activities you would like your visit to include in your reservation. Note: The minimum ratio of chaperones to children is 1 adult to every 10 children; maximum group size is 60 children, plus chaperones. For questions, or if your group has other special needs (children under age 5, or group sizes > 60), please contact LibraryTours@sandiego.gov.
All Afternoon Tours meet in the library Courtyard, next to the front entrance, at 1:20PM.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
How long will our visit last?
A whole-building tour runs approximately 45 minutes to an hour. We recommend allowing time for children to browse the collection, and explore the space and technology in the Denny Sanford Children’s Library following a tour. Depending on the activities you would like to include in your trip, or a specific spaces you would like to explore, your visit could last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.
Can my students get library cards prior to their visit?
Students can apply for library cards in advance and receive them the day of their visit. To arrange for library cards for your students, please print out a Library Card Application (English or Spanish) for each of your students. Send the application home with the students, to be filled out by a parent or guardian and returned to you. Applications must be legible, and include the signature and ID number of a parent or guardian in order to be processed.
Submit your completed applications at least two weeks in advance of your visit, to the Denny Sanford Children's Library at Central Library - 330 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101. Or call (619) 238-6664 for other options.
If your children already have library cards, please ensure that they bring them on the day of your visit in order to check out materials. Materials checked out at the Central Library may be returned to any San Diego Public Library branch.
Is there a place where the children can eat lunch at the library?
Students are welcome to bring sack lunches and eat in the library’s Courtyard. If you would like to venture outside the Library, you may wish to picnic at Park at the Park, located within Petco Park, which is across the street, and serves as a neighborhood park during non-event hours. See Padres website for more information.
If you plan to bring group lunches, the Library can provide a non-refrigerated space for closed containers (e.g., coolers, boxes, or plastic tubs). Otherwise, please be prepared to carry lunches in backpacks or store them in your vehicles. The Library cannot store bags or purses.
What are our parking and transportation options to and from the library?
Please visit the Library's Parking page to see parking and transport options.
