Maria hid in plain sight by dressing like a boy in order to play sports in Taliban controlled Pakistan

Join us for a captivating discussion and networking reception featuring special guest, Professional Squash Player and Humanitarian Maria Toorpakai and moderator, BBC World News Correspondent, Laura Trevelyan.

Maria Toorpakai was born in a violently oppressive northwest tribal region of Pakistan, where girls rarely leave their homes and are strictly forbidden to play sports. She dressed like a boy to participate in the competitive sports she loved and became a lightning rod for equality, peace and empowerment. She has been appointed by Pope Francis to serve on his Sport4Humanity Commission and Thomas Bach to serve on the IOC Women in Sport Commission. She is an Ambassador for Peace for Prince Albert II’s Peace and Sport Commission. Her book A Different Kind of Daughter: The Girl Who Hid from the Taliban in Plain Sight and her documentary Girl Unbound were both released in 2016. She has spoken at the United Nations twice, where she is a frequent guest.
