Four years ago, our son, Sam Walker, was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that destroys photoreceptor cells in the retina. (The retina is the layer of tissue at the back of the inner eye that converts light images to nerve signals and sends them to the brain.) As the photoreceptor cells die, blindness or near blindness results. A cure has not been found, and little can be done to slow the progression of the disease. But there is hope.
Ed Stone, MD/PHd, director of The Stephen A. Wynn Institute for Vision Research at The University of Iowa, is taking a world-leading role in the eradication of human blindness. Through stem cell research, education and clinical care, Dr. Stone is working toward promising treatments that we believe will lead to a cure for Retinitis Pigmentosa – a cure that will save the gift of sight for Sam and thousands of other folks suffering from inherited eye diseases. As these diseases are rare, they will not attract investment from the private sector or the government. I hope you will join me and many other friends and acquaintances on the golf course this summer for a fundraiser in support of Dr. Stone and his important work. In addition to golf and fellowship, Dr. Stone will share the amazing progress he and his team are making.
