9:30am-11:00am: Samba-Reggae Dance Workshop led by Vika S. Hernandez (with Live Percussion)

Swing your body to the intoxicating sounds of Bahia, Brazil’s Carnaval celebration! Move your hips and learn the steps to Afro-Brazilian rhythms in a fun and uplifting environment. All levels and abilities welcome.

11:00am-12:30pm: Brazilian Percussion Drum Workshop (led by Indio Jackson)

Feel the power of the drums as you explore the multi-dimensional sounds of Brazilian percussion. All instruments will be provided.

Artist Bios:

VIKA S. HERNANDEZ:

Vika S Hernandez is a dance artist from San Diego, CA. She holds a M.A. of Arts in Global & International Studies with an emphasis on Global Culture and Religion. Her unique dance classes investigate how cosmology shapes our understanding of the universe as well as our understanding of the human body. A lifelong dancer, she credits her embodied knowledge from her continuous dance and capoeira training with Mestre Mariano Silva, as well as her training in Bahia, Brazil where she studied Orixa Sacred Dances, Afro-Contemporary, Samba, and Samba-Reggae & Capoeira. She is a part of Bahia Magia Dance Co. and has performed professionally throughout California, Miami, Florida and Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. She is the Creative Director of the International Women’s Day Arts+DanceXchange, an annual event honoring women with art, dance, community and cultural exchange. She is also the leader of Sambamerica Dance Collective, a performance group based in San Diego, CA that integrates various genres of dances from Latin America offering an explosive and one-of-a-kind show in celebration of the human spirit. INDIO JACKSON:

Multi-instrumentalist, Music Producer, DJ & Capoeirista born on January 11, 1978 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, began his artistic career by the age of 15, mixing elements of the Afro-Brazilian Percussion and Capoeira. He has always been recognized by the resemblance to his indigenous heritage of the Native Brazilian Indians, and from there the artist "Indio Jackson" was born. Twenty-one years of exposure to the artistic scene has allowed Indio many opportunities performing Capoeira, Percussion, Guitar, Singing and DJ all of which enabling him to evolve into the extraordinarily versatile musician of today. Indio had the honor of working with artists such as; Ricky Martin, Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez, Don Omar, Marc Anthony, Maluma, Elvis Crespo, Alejandro Sanz, Jesse & Joy, Debi Nova, Wisin, Carlinhos Brown, Timbalada, Daniela Mercury, Claudia Leitte, and amongst many others. In 2010 Indio released his first single "My Party" feat. Denim Deleon, the song opened doors to the artist realize a huge number of special appearances in music videos, TV commercials and other events. In 2016 Indio Jackson releases an EP Album "Oxumare Beats of the World" introducing to the world his "Sambareggaeton" style, a fusion of Brazilian rhythm from his hometown called "Sambareggae" blended to the famous Puerto Rican Reggaeton. Ever the international figure, Indio called Tokyo, Japan home for a time, but now resides in Miami Florida.
