Event description
Doug McCombs // Aki Tsuyuko // Sam Prekop

About this Event

Regardless of the style he is working in, Sam Prekop’s music is always imbued with a sense of wide-eyed discovery and exploration. As the singer and guitarist of The Sea and Cake, Prekop has incorporated elements of traditional styles from around the world, expanding the public perception of what it means to be the leader of a pop band. In recent years, he has also established himself as a modular synthesist, building his instrument meticulously to find the perfect combination of oscillators, sequencers, limiters and filters to create a system that allows him to create sounds that are surprising and inviting. The Republic is his most recent synthesizer work, following 2010’s Old Punch Card, and showcases Prekop’s talent for creating expressive music through mechanical patterns, repetitions, and chance. Prekop’s innate gifts of melodic turns of phrase that have made him a revered songwriter are transferred into new forms in his synthesizer work, aided by the unpredictable melodic capabilities of analog sequencers, and The Republic is an exciting new chapter in his development as an accomplished synthesist.

Aki Tsuyuko is a composer from Japan, who began composing on electric organ in 1990. Her first solo album, Ongakushitsu was released from Nobukazu Takemura's Childisc label in 1998 and later on Jim O'Rourke's Moikai in 2000. Since then, Tsuyuko has performed with the likes of Doug McCombs and John Herndon, and also has written for independent movies and animations. She released HOKANE in 2006 from Thrill Jockey , Empty Talk in 2017 from the influential Tokyo label/shop ENBAN and the newest album Yang in 2018 from Kyoto-based tea company “Ujikoen” (est. 1865). Now Tsuyuko gives solo experimental recital playing with piano and electronics “Aki Tsuyuko's Room” at ENBAN every two months.

Douglas McCombs is a musician living in Chicago. McCombs plays bass and guitar with many groups linked to Chicago’s independent rock community—Tortoise, Eleventh Dream Day, Brokeback, The Sea and Cake, Black Duck and has recorded and/or performed live with many national touring bands—Yo La Tengo, The For Carnation, Calexico, Rhys Chatham, School of Language, Stereolab, Azita Youssefi, and Charnel Ground among others.

For this show McCombs will perform solo on a Fender Bass VI guitar.
