Event description

Description

UF/IFAS Extension, FloridaSea Grant: Salty Topics Marine Research Speaker Series. This Spring 2019 series will focus on coastal and marine water quality, an issue of utmost concern for the residents of Pinellas County and the greater Tampa Bay region.

Salty Topics: Coastal Cave Ecology and Status of Saltwater Intrusion

Submerged limestone caves along Florida’s coast act as the “headwater streams” of many estuaries, supporting important manatee and fish habitat. Ecological processes unique to coastal caves produce large quantities of organic material that are exported to estuaries via springs. Florida’s underwater cave ecosystems are also sensitive to groundwater over-extraction, making them useful indicators of seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers. Combining scientific cave diving techniques with geochemical, hydrogeological, and microbial community analyses has allowed us to identify the natural and anthropogenic factors which define the role of underwater caves in the coastal landscape.

Robert J. Scharping is a PhD candidate and the president of the Karst Research Group at University of South Florida. He grew up in Kansas and received a BS in conservation biology at Kansas State University. His past research includes Chesapeake Bay oysters, inland blue holes in the Bahamas, desert stream fishes in New Mexico, and whale sharks in the Bay Islands of Honduras.

Light refreshments will be served at 5:30. Please arrive early to enjoy refreshments, meet the organizers, check in, and find your seats. Salty Topics is generously sponsored by the Friends of Weedon Island who support education, preservation, and protection of Weedon Island’s habitat, ecology, and cultural history.
