Description

Hey there! Ready for a weekend full of fun, design and community impact? Then, grab a ticket and join us at the first annual Salt Lake Service Jam! We've partnered with Impact Hub SLC and V School to bring you a weekend full of inspirational guest speakers, new design thinking and service design methods and an opportunity to change your community for the better.

Salt Lake Service Jam is part of the Global Service Jam. From March 29 to 31, people interested in service and customer experience design and making change in their community will meet simultaneously all over the world.

In a spirit of experimentation, innovation, community, and friendly competition, teams will have less than 48 hours to develop and prototype a completely new service inspired by a shared secret theme. At the end of the weekend, a collection of brand new services will be published to the world.

What is the Global Service Jam?

Service Jams are a fantastic opportunity for curious people to come together, share knowledge, experience human-centered design, and have a great time.

It is a fun three-day event full of service design, packed with surprises and lots of tools.

  • Brainstorm hundreds of ideas and pick the right one

  • Understand your customer; discover what they live for

  • Work in teams and build your creative confidence

  • Make it tangible. Prototype and test your idea before submission on Sunday

Event Schedule

Friday, March 29 | 5:30 PM – 9:30 PM

To kickoff the Jam, we will have an introduction and meet & greet cocktail hour while participants get registered. We’ll then take a tour of Impact Hub - our killer workspace for the weekend (thank you to them for generously donating this space for us to use). We will have dinner while we wait for the Secret theme to be revealed. After that we have a Futurist that will be giving a talk to kick off our brainstorming and inspire us to think big. Participants will then form teams to begin brainstorming and conceptualizing what will be their focus for the next 48 hours.

Saturday, March 30 | 9 AM – 5:30 PM

Today is all about researching, co-creating, and prototyping ideas. Participants start the day out in the city talking to potential users to do empathy interviews, understand the challenges they face and talk to them about potential solutions. We have a guest speaker coming in to talk to us about VR and all the possibilities it creates. We'll have a great lunch and In the afternoon participants will jump into a series of visioning activities such as story boarding, service blueprinting, role playing and 1st round prototypes. We'll wrap up and head home to recharge before our final day.

Sunday, March 31 | 9 AM – 3 PM

It may be the last day, but the action is fiercer than ever. Teams will finalize and validate their prototypes, and prepare to present to each other. We'll have a guest speaker come in to teach us how to create effective pitches. After that teams will present "shark tank style" to our expert panel. We'll close by uploading our prototypes to the Global Service Jam, sharing feedback and learnings, and saying goodbye to newfound friends.

FAQs

Do I need to be a designer to jam?

You do not need to be a designer to jam. It doesn't matter your discipline - you just need to be interested in services or creativity, and have an open, enquiring mind. You might be a service designer, an academic, a customer, a student, a customer experience person, a UX ninja, a patient, someone in the customer frontline, unemployed, an actor, an artist, a doctor, a grandpa or a kid.

What is provided at the jam?

In addition to prototyping supplies and materials, templates, we will provide dinner on Friday and lunch on Saturday and Sunday.

What should I bring to the jam?

We recommend bringing your laptop, notebook, and an open mind. The jam team will provide materials for you and your team to prototype, but if you have favorite tools or materials, we’d love to see what you love!

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

We're here to help! Please write us at slcservicejam@gmail.com
