Salt and Pepper Music Series

TRG ENTERPRISES/RadioVizions, in partnership with The UNA Entertainment Industry Department, The Alabama Folklife Association (AFA), and The Muscle Shoals Music Association (MSMA) is proud to announce a new Roots Music Series to be held at UNA’s The Mane Room in Florence, Al., Birthplace of W.C. Handy, known as the Firstather of the Blues. Titled “The Salt and Pepper Music Series”, a phrase attributed to well-known local Shoals music promoter and broadcaster, Bob Carl Bailey, the serieswill be presented on the Fourth Thursday of the months of February, March, and April of 2017 and will focus on intercultural performances of Acoustic, Traditional Blues Music.This is the form of music that influenced Handy and is the foundation of AmericanPopular Music, from Jazz to Rock and Roll to Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Hip Hop,Country…….all of today’s “Pop” music.
The Series will feature Traditional Alabama Blues Masters starting February 23rd at 7PM with the first performance. Headlining will be Blues Harmonica Master, Jock Webb Sr.from Birmingham and his partner Clarence “Bluesman” Davis from Eutaw, Al. Openingf or them will be the Muscle Shoals Throw Down King, Maxwell Russell, who isrepresenting The Shoals in Memphis this year at the IBC, International Blues Challenge.
March 23rd at 7PM will find live on stage, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Sam Lay, best known for his work with The Electric Flag, Paul Butterfield, and a host of Chicago and Delta Blues Masters. Sam is originally from Birmingham Al. and now resides in Chicago.Opening for Sam will 2Blu Duo, featuring another harp virtuoso, Bruce Andrews andmaster guitarist, George Dudley.
April 27th brings Jontavious Willis, an exciting young Bluesman that’s becoming one ofthe most sought after acoustic performers of this new generation. Taj Mahal calls him his“Wonderboy, the Wunderkind. He’s a great new voice of the 21st century in acoustic￼blues”. Opening for Willis will be Gloria Sitz, better known as “Alabama Anne”, aprotégé of Delta Master, Johnny Shines.
Educational components are being developed to enhance the series, such as Q&A sessions with the artists, complimentary tickets for students, in school performances, and a student work shop with Jontavious Willis to be held in the Mane Room Friday April 28th. Students will be encouraged to bring their instruments for an informal“jam session” with Willis. For registration information call 256-845-0203 or firstname.lastname@example.org .
Advance Tickets will be $10.00 for Adults, $5.00 for Students (Grade School ThruC ollege with ID), $5.00 Senors (over 65) and $15.00 at the door on the day of the shows.
A series ticket will also be available for $20 that will admit one adult to all three shows.
Tickets go on sell Monday Feb. 6th at local outlets, Counts Brothers Music in Muscle Shoals, Underground Art and Music in Florence, and at both the Florence and Muscle Shoals locations of NuWave Vinyl.
