Description

Salon@615 is pleased to present New York Times bestselling historian Michael Beschloss, in conversation with Jon Meacham, for his new book, Presidents of War.

About the book:

Ten years in the research and writing, Presidents of War is a fresh, magisterial, intimate look at a procession of Chief Executives as they took the United States into conflict, mobilized the nation, fought for victory, and expanded presidential power.

This important book shows how, step by step, over two centuries, we have moved away from our Founders’ demand that the decision to wage war be made by Congress—and that full military conflict be undertaken only as a last resort. It shows how, under the pressures of war, some of our Presidents have constricted our democracy, infringing on the Constitution. Above all, it shows, as Beschloss writes in his Preface, how “the life or death of much of the human race has come to depend on the character of the single person who happens to be the President of the United States.” Library Journal says that Beschloss’s book is “history but also a guide for leadership today.”

About the author:

Michael Beschloss was born in Chicago in 1955, and attended Phillips Academy (Andover), Williams College and Harvard Business School. He has served as a historian at the Smithsonian Institution, a Senior Associate Member at St. Antony’s College (Oxford) and a Senior Fellow of the Annenberg Foundation.

Beschloss serves as the NBC News Presidential Historian and a contributor to the PBS NewsHour. He has won an Emmy and six honorary degrees. He has also been awarded the State of Illinois’s Order of Lincoln, the Ambassador Book Prize, the Harry S. Truman Public Service Award, the Founders Award of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the New York State Archives Award and the Rutgers University Living History Award. He is a trustee of the White House Historical Association and the National Archives Foundation, and a former trustee of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation. He is on Twitter at @BeschlossDC.
