Description

SALAM Center presents Jonathan Eig discussing his new best-selling book, "Ali: A Life," which was named Sport Illustrated's Best Book of 2017 and is also on the New York Times Best Seller list and the best books lists of The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, The Smithsonian, and The Economist, among others.

“I am America,” Ali declared. “I am the part you won’t recognize. But get used to me—black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own. Get used to me.”

The New York Times review of Eig's book offered this: "This richly researched, sympathetic yet unsparing portrait of a controversial figure for whom the personal and the political dramatically fused could not come at a more appropriate time in our beleaguered American history. Muhammad Ali, on the very day following his victory over the heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, in 1964, chose to defy the world’s expectations by converting to the Nation of Islam — “I’m not a Christian anymore. I know where I’m going and I know the truth and I don’t have to be what you want me to be.”

Ken Burns called Jonathan Eig a "master storyteller." Eig is the author of five books, three of them New York Times best sellers. He is a former staff writer for The Wall Street Journal, where he remains a contributing writer. Eig has also written for The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and Slate.com, among others. Prior to The Wall Street Journal, he worked as a feature writer for Chicago magazine and as a news reporter for The Dallas Morning News and The New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Eig has taught writing at Columbia College Chicago and Northwestern. He has appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Fresh Airwith Terry Gross, and in two Ken Burns documentaries: Prohibition and Jackie Robinson. He is currently working with Burns and Florentine Films in making a documentary on Muhammad Ali.
