Event Details

International House is thrilled to invite you to our first-ever Sakura Park Festival. We welcome students and the community to kick off Fall 2017 I-House-style!

Groove to main stage performances by Underground System Afrobeat and join the street food revolution by sampling some of NYC’s most popular food trucks. Let your inner K-Pop dancer out, create an authentic Vietnamese woodcut painting, join in games from mancala to ultimate frisbee, and enjoy the spirit of community in the beautiful Sakura Park.

Entrance to the festival is free and it is family-friendly.


• Dr. Linda H. Humes, Founder, Yaffa Cultural Arts, Inc. and Master Drummer Sanga of the Valley

• 3pm, 5:30pm: Groove to Underground System an 8-piece Afrobeat band celebrating a fun mix of cultures and musical influences—from the Miami sound to South American rhythms to American jazz and funk.
Band members have shared the stage with groups such as Antibalas, FELA! performers, Miguel Zenon, and more.

• 2pm, 4:30pm: Opened by Manhattan School of Music jazz group The Rocky Amer Quintet.

• 2:30pm: Let your inner K-Pop dancer out with I LOVE DANCE founder MJ Choi and her international dance crew.
• 4pm: Experience the Indonesian plate dance (Tari Piring), followed by an introduction  to West Sumatran dance style workshop with Saung Budaya Indonesian Dance.
• 5pm, 6pm: Explore African-American roots with this movement workshop led by acclaimed Broadway and film
choreographer “Baba” Obediah Wright and his Balance Dance Theatre.


• Design imaginative balloon shapes with master twisters from Yaffa Cultural Arts, Inc.
• Try your artistic hand at brush painting and calligraphy with Korean rice paper, brushes, and ink with master artist Sungsook Hong Setton.
• Discover Đông Hồ wood cut folk painting with the Institute for Vietnamese Culture & Education.


• 2-7pm: Challenge your mind, body and spirit by playing games from around the world including Dominoes (Caribbean), Double Dutch (The Americas), Mancala (Africa), rubber band skipping (China), and Yutnori (Korea)

• 3pm: Ultimate Frisbee (United States) and more!

• Dig in and sample a panorama of delicious bites celebrating some of the globe’s tastiest traditions—featuring some of NYC’s most popular food trucks and neighborhood restaurants! (All day)
