Hosted by Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) in collaboration with RMIT and the 50:50 Equality Project with the support of ABC News, and the Burnet Institute.

Ili Baré, the Director of THE LEADERSHIP, is a Sydney-based documentary filmmaker who won the Eureka Prize for Science Communication and Journalism for her work on Becoming Superhuman (2017) and the US Golden Cine Award for Environment and Science for her documentary The Secret Life of Breasts (2015). Her documentary The Silent Epidemic (2011) won the ATOM Award for Best Documentary, Science, Technology and Environment, and the Mental Health Services Broadcast Award.

Dr. Wafa El-adhami is the CEO of Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Ltd. She led the SAGE Pilot for over four years, and oversaw the expansion of SAGE and its incorporation into a not-for-profit company. Wafa has a research background in molecular biology and microbiology and prior to joining SAGE, she worked internationally including as senior manager at the Health Authority Abu Dhabi (UAE). Wafa is a graduate of the university of Kuwait (BSc), and has postgraduate degrees from the Australian National University (MSc and PhD) and University of Queensland (Postgraduate Diploma Technology Business Management).

Professor Brendan Crabb AC PhD FAHMS FASM is an infectious disease researcher with a special interest in Malaria. Since 2008, he has been the Director and CEO of the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health. He is the past-President of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes, currently a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences, and the Australian Society for Microbiology. He serves on the Council of the National Health, and Medical Research Council of Australia and is a member of the AAHMS COVID-19 Expert Committee. Internationally, he serves on the International Advisory Boards of the Sanger Institute (UK) and on the WHO Malaria Vaccine Advisory Committee in Geneva. In 2015, he was awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia, Australia’s highest civilian honour.

Olivia Willis is a health reporter for the ABC and the host of Patient Zero on Radio National. She writes about health and medicine for ABC News and regularly appears on ABC radio and television. Olivia has worked as a reporter and producer for Radio National since 2014, and is a founding producer of the award-winning women’s health podcast Ladies, We Need to Talk.

Professor Kay Latham is the Dean of STEMM Diversity & Inclusion - a Victorian first, in STEM College, and the Lead for SAGE Athena SWAN at RMIT University. She is an experienced materials’ research chemist, educator, and advocate for equity and diversity. Her career to-date spans 10 years in the chemical industry, and 22 years in the HE sector. She is a postgraduate of the University of Cambridge (Sidney Sussex College), a Chartered Chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (CChem FRSC) UK, and a Past President of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (Victoria) - the first woman to take on this role.

Professor Lisa French is Dean of RMIT University’s School of Media and Communication and Professor of Screen and Media. She has published extensively on women in film, produced documentaries, is Co-chair of a UNESCO 19 global university research network on media, gender and ICTs, and is a member of Screen Australia’s Gender Matters Taskforce. Her forthcoming book is: The Female Gaze in Documentary Film – an International Perspective (Palgrave Macmillian 2021).

Produced by multi-award-winning Bunya Productions’ Greer Simpkin (Mystery Road, Sweet Country), The Leadership is an observational documentary written and directed by Ili Baré in her feature-length debut. Set against the planet’s last untouched wilderness, The Leadership delivers an altogether unexpected and original reflection on what it takes to be a good leader, while unearthing the systemic obstacles to women’s advancement in science and beyond.
