Safety Differently Workshop — from Research to Practice: A one-day co-design workshop with Professor Sidney Dekker brought you by ORC HSE

How can we do safety differently? This is a question asked by many who have recognized their plateauing safety performance and stifling safety bureaucracy. Recognizing the urgency of the question, however, is not the same as answering it.

That is what this unique one-day co-design workshop intends to help you do. Together with colleagues from other organizations, and Professor Dekker, bestselling author of (among other works) The Safety Anarchist, Just Culture, Drift into Failure and The Field Guide to Understanding Human Error, we will look at the research and turn it into proposals for practice.

This is a unique opportunity to calibrate where you are in your journey toward Safety Differently, and learn about the various pathways taken by colleagues. In a series of intensive sessions throughout the day, you will get up to date on the various safety differently and human & organizational performance topics and co-design and develop directions forward for your own organization or the organizations you consult into. This may include:

  • Decluttering unnecessary safety bureaucracy and refocusing on the safety of work, rather than the work of safety;
  • Dimming the light on lagging indicators (or outcome measures) such as LTI, and instead developing possibilities to hold directors and managers accountable for building positive capacities (the input values);
  • Sensitizing the organization to the difference between work-as-imagined versus work-as-done by developing managerial and supervisory approaches which respect frontline workmanship under goal conflicts and resource constraints;
  • Stepping away from ‘investigations’ and instead co-designing a process for your organization to engage in learning reviews that are applicable when things go well and when they don’t go so well; and
  • Ditching retributive systems of so-called ‘just culture’ policies and algorithms and co-designing and developing processes and policies based on restorative principles and practices that fit your organization.

“The companies that will create the most economic value in the future, will be the ones that find ways to participate more effectively in a broader range of more diverse knowledge flows that can refresh knowledge stocks at an accelerating rate.”
John Hagel, co-head, Deloitte Center for the Edge

Safety Differently creates a knowledge flow in which people are not a problem to control, but as a resource to harness. It defers to expertise by avoiding always telling people what to do, instead asking them what they need to be successful. It turns safety back into an ethical responsibility for people, assets, and communities, instead of a bureaucratic accountability to managers, boards and regulators. Safety Differently doesn’t just want to stop things from going wrong but is curious about discovering why things go well and helping organizations enhance the capacities in their teams, people and processes that make it so. Safety Differently encourages different responses to incidents, through a restorative just culture and honest learning reviews.

This workshop is for everyone who is prepared to:

  • Take a deep look at the advanced research and principles that continue to emerge on Safety Differently;
  • Co-discover and design the key elements of a plan to engage management as a partner in owning the transitional journey;
  • Critically assess and accept the shortcomings of traditional and existing approaches to safety management;
  • Design possible micro-experiments to test Safety Differently ideas and generate data internal to their organization;
  • Develop a practical implementation plan tailored to the character of their individual companies;
  • Share practical examples/insights from companies who are at least part way down their transitional journey; and
  • Help position this transition as a continuing journey, rather than the ‘program of the month' (PotM) that will inevitably lose traction when the next PotM rises up.

PREREQUISITE: A prerequisite for participating in this workshop is prior knowledge of Safety Differently principles and practices and having completed any pre-readings that may be sent out in advance of the workshop.
