Microbial Inactivation – Lessons Learned and a Path Forward

You are invited to the third in a series of symposia sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, Office of Research Services, Division of Occupational Health and Safety (DOHS), with the purpose of promoting a culture of safe science in the conduct of biomedical research.

View Symposium Program

Safety by Design 2017 will bring together scientists, laboratory technicians and managers, and environmental health and safety experts from academia, private industry, and the federal government to look seriously at the science behind microbial inactivation, review lessons learned from past missteps, identify current knowledge gaps, and examine strategies for moving forward. The August 2016 GAO Report to Congressional Committees, Improved Oversight of Dangerous Pathogens Needed to Mitigate Risk, will frame the Symposium program.

The Symposium will be an interactive assembly and will include formal presentations, panel discussions, and work group sessions. Participants will be encouraged to share their experience-based opinions and expertise to the collective thinking and discussions that will occur over the three-day meeting. There is no registration fee.

Symposium Monographs

The information presented at the Symposium will be published as a monograph. The 2015 Biosafety Monograph prepared following the Safety by Design 2011 Symposium can be found at: https://www.ors.od.nih.gov/sr/dohs/Documents/Biosafety%20Monograph.pdf
