Safeguarding Our Rights: The ECHR Across the UK’s Devolved Nations
Overview
Safeguarding Our Rights: The ECHR Across the UK’s Devolved Nations
For 75 years, communities across the UK have used the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to speak up for their fundamental rights.
The ECHR has made sure that people in Government must make decisions that protect people who are very often ignored. This includes survivors of domestic violence, older people, LGBTI people, disabled people and more.
Every day, people use the ECHR to hold Government to account.
It is also a bedrock of peace in Northern Ireland, and a core pillar of devolution.
Join us to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the ECHR in action across the devolved nations. Hear from experts about what is true - and what is untrue - about the ECHR and immigration. And bring your insights to discussions around how we can stand up together for our human rights.
The event will be chaired by Jen Ang, a human rights lawyer, and a legal expert on human rights, migrants’ rights and children’s rights, and the rights of survivors of torture. Jen is Director Lawmanity, and also Professor in Practice at the University of Glasgow School of Law.
Speakers will include:
- Kevin Hanratty, Human Rights Consortium (Northern Ireland)
- Ele Hicks, Human Rights Consortium Cymru
- Charlie McMillan, Human Rights Consortium Scotland
- Rachel Hogan, Children's Law Centre, Northern Ireland
- Rhian Davies, Disability Wales
- Tim Hopkins, LGBT campaigner in Scotland & former Director of Equality Network
- Andy Sirel, Just Right Scotland and an expert in all things ECHR
