Description

Join us for our annual celebration reception commemorating the date when Union Soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and proclaimed that the Civil War had ended and slavery was abolished. On June 19, 1865, the residents of Galveston were the last ones to be informed of the Emancipation Proclamation, two and a half years after it was signed on January 1, 1863.

Featuring:

  • VOICES OF OUR ELDERS video series introduction – In place of Juneteenth’s usual celebration format, we will introduce a new 6-part video series at this reception which will be produced this year. Learn more about this exciting new video series, which will feature interviews with community elders who’ll share their experiences in the struggle for civil rights and other important issues.
  • A special California State Library exhibit examining pre-Civil War California and the impact of the Emancipation Proclamation on the state
  • Music by Flyism Uncensored
  • Food prepared by Sacramento Juneteenth Black Chefs Collaborative
