From Angela Davis to Oscar Lopez Rivera, repressive governments have long silenced political prisoners for their principles and beliefs of justice and liberation.
In the Philippines, there are still hundreds of political prisoners. Their incarcerations are meant to break their spirits and muffle their legitimate voices of criticism to government policies that crush true democracy for the Philippines.
President Duterte's recent declaration of martial law in the southern island of Mindanao is another step away from long-fought peace talks for the country; releasing political prisoners was a significant part of the negotiations. Martial law has also displaced thousands of families and has become a ground for warrantless attacks and human rights violations such as the continued repression of people criticizing the government.
With the help of SELDA (an organization of political prisoners & former detainees) & Karapatan (a human rights organization), we were able to obtain art and cultural work made by political prisoners. We're humbled and honored to share their stories with you.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
With love and resistance,
GABRIELA San Francisco
