Panel Discussion: How Do We Encourage a Ready and Diversified Workforce in STEM?

The S2S Salon will engage a panel of experts in discussions on how to encourage an inclusive and highly skilled STEM workforce for the 21st Century, in the context of the needs and demands of the state of New Jersey and the nation.

Master of Ceremonies :Debbie Hart, President and CEO, BioNJ; Vice-Chair, NJ Commission on Science, Innovation and Technology; and S2S Board Member

Guest Speaker: Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker, Chair, Assembly Science, Innovation and Technology Committee; and Member, NJ Commission on Science, Innovation and Technology

Students 2 Science will be presenting two Standing Ovation Awards.

  • Alejandra Ceja, Executive Director of the Panasonic Foundation - S2S STEM Leadership and Advocacy Award : This award is to honor an individual who has not only demonstrated a strong dedication to STEM but has been a dynamic leader in the corporate and public sectors. They are accomplished in their personal and professional lives and they regularly advocate for the equity of students of all ages and especially among underserved communities. They are also committed to elevating the dialogue around STEM education and how to effectively impact and inspire more minds through innovative collaborations and partnerships.

  • Dr. Zakiya Smith Ellis, Secretary of Higher Education, New Jersey - S2S Pathways to Excellence Award : This award is to honor an individual who is an influencer and key decisionmaker in the public sector and who has demonstrated a strong passion and dedication to bringing educational equity to underserved youth at all stages. In their leadership roles, they have helped formulate innovative educational policies, promoted public/private, state/federal partnerships, and encouraged dialogue among diverse stakeholders to address complex issues. Their work reflects a strong commitment to raising broader awareness of higher education opportunities and empowering our youth via increasing access to education.

Goals for the event:

  • Elevate the need for workforce readiness and promote diversity and inclusion in STEM by bringing together S2S key stakeholders and influencers from the corporate and public sectors. This event include a panel discussion with Debbie Hart, President and Chief Executive Officer of BioNJ, as our moderator articulating the technical employment needs of New Jersey.
  • Inspire the discussion with guest speaker, Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker, Governor appointed, Chair of the Science Innovation and Technology Committee, presenting our education and workforce readiness challenges in New Jersey, looking at sectors such as energy, biotechnology, life sciences, and technology corporations in the state and their needs.

About Students 2 Science:

Students 2 Science celebrates 10 years since its inception, serving over 66,000 students throughout underserved communities in the state of New Jersey. Our mission is to inspire, motivate and educate elementary, middle and high school students to pursue careers in STEM.

S2S provides state-of-the-art, rigorous, and real-world STEM education (both in-lab and virtual) to students in 5th-12th grades. S2S also offers professional development for teachers by increasing their knowledge of high demand STEM career opportunities as well as introducing innovative teaching solutions in hands-on authentic STEM.

S2S has two state-of-the-art laboratories in East Hanover and Newark. The Newark Technology Center is the result of a formal partnership with the Newark Board of Education and is designed to provide rigorous STEM education to all students (over 32,000) in the district.
