S-131 Firefighter Type 1
Overview
This course provides the nationally recognized training required to prepare experienced wildland firefighters to perform as Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) under National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards. S-131 focuses on leadership, advanced fireline operations, and the responsibilities of senior firefighters working within a crew or module.
Course Overview
S-131 Firefighter Type 1 builds on foundational wildland firefighting skills and prepares students for increased responsibility on the fireline. The course emphasizes leadership, tactical awareness, communication, and decision-making required of experienced firefighters supporting crew supervision and operations.
Topics include:
- Firefighter Type 1 roles and responsibilities
- Advanced fireline tactics and operations
- Leadership and crew dynamics
- Situational awareness and risk management
- Communication and coordination within the ICS structure
- Supporting supervision and tactical objectives on incidents
This course fulfills the NWCG training requirement for the Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) position.

Prerequisites / Eligibility
Students should meet the following prerequisites prior to attending:
- Completion of Wildland Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) training
- At least two years of wildland firefighting experience
This course is intended for experienced firefighters preparing to take on expanded leadership and operational responsibilities.
