Join us for the Ryan White and William L. Yarber Lecture where Jeanne White-Ginder--Ryan White's mother--will present Sandra Thurman with the Ryan White Distinguished Leadership Award.

Sandra L. Thurman, Chief Strategy Officer for the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), will recieve the Ryan White Distinguished Leadership Award and give a short lecture on her work in global AIDS relief. Sandra Thurman is a renowned global adovcate for key and vulnerable populations. For over 30 years, she has collaborated with a a wide range of partners to advance development and management of HIV/AIDS programs and policies at the local, national, and global levels. While she is known most for her focus on HIV prevention, care and treatment, and policy, Ms. Thurman has made important contributions to polio eradication, women's health, children's health, and cancer prevention and treatment.

The Ryan White Distinguished Leadership Award was created in 2009 byt hte Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention (RCAP) to honor Ryan White and persons who have made significant, national, and/or international achievements in HIV/AIDS prevention. Ryan White, a rural, INdiana youth, contracted HIV in 1984 and became a national poster boy on AIDS until his death in 1990, a few months prior to his intended enrolllment at indiana University, bloomington. The award plaque given to each recipient reads "in appreciation for your outstanding contributions to HIV/AIDS prevention and for being an exemplary bearer of the standard of excellence and commitment needed to combat HIV/AIDS."
