About this event

Action-oriented, POC-led

Rx Houston: Racism as a Public Health Crisis brings together organizers of color to build consensus around Houston-area racial and social justice priorities and to deepen our understanding of how racism is impacting our communities’ health.

Through shared dialogue, this virtual series will produce a framework that organizers and local officials can use for engaging in anti-racism advocacy. Rx Houston pushes for accountability in the ways power holders change systems and redistribute resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of this series?

Racism is a raging pandemic evident across our institutions and embedded within the systems that produce them. Harris County recently outlined how racism has adversely impacted the lives of people of color in Houston and beyond, and the COVID-19 pandemic has further underscored this reality. Racism continues to be the highest indicator of poor health outcomes and experiences for people of color. Through this dialogue series, we are figuring out how to purge it from our city.

Who is this series for?

This event series is for anyone on the front lines committed to advancing racial justice. We are specifically targeting people of color who see themselves as current or emerging leaders. If you are leading or actively serving communities of color in the Houston-area, your voice is needed. We define people of color as those who identify as Black, Latinx, Asian-Pacific Islander, South Asian or Indigenous, including Queer folx of color and those who identify as bi-racial and multi-racial.

Are non-people of color allowed to participate in this series?

People of color did not create this system that perpetuates racial injustice, and it is not our sole responsibility to fix it.

White and white-passing allies working to combat racism and inequity in Houston are welcome to join us; however, priority will be given to POC voices. We see this as an opportunity for our white allies to actively listen, observe, and reflect on how their own work as an ally can make space for and authentically support racial justice work.

How were people invited to participate in the series and discussions?

We are largely spreading the word about Rx Houston by recruiting people in our network who are engaged in this work and asking them to also spread the word. Our goal is to be stewards – not gatekeepers – of this process, as we create space for dialogue about how to build a city where people of color can thrive and our needs are equitably considered and addressed.

What is the end goal?

Through a series of collective, critical dialogues, Rx Houston will produce a framework and tools that organizers and local officials can use for engaging in anti-racism advocacy in our communities.
