About this event

Rx for Science Literacy is partnering with Duke University to present The Science of Energy Balance: Calorie Intake and Physical Activity, a one-day in-person workshop at Duke.

This workshop will feature the NIH Science of Energy Balance: Calorie Intake and Physical Activity curriculum, which is designed for middle school use. This NIH curriculum supplement introduces students to key concepts of energy balance and provides a context within which nutrition concepts can be better understood. The curriculum also allows attendees to develop understanding that achieving energy balance is a long-term, rather than a short-term, goal. Duke scientists will share research into obesity, Type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease as a way of updating attendees on health conditions that relate to weight management.

Please note that at this time, Duke requires masks to be worn in classroom settings. If this policy changes, we will alert all registered attendees.

Incentives for attending an Rx for Science Literacy workshop include:

  • 1 unit of certification renewal credit for North Carolina-certified educators (4 hours of additional work required)
  • Free supplemental curriculum and other bioscience education materials to use in the classroom
  • Free lunch
  • Substitute teacher support (up to $80)
