About this event

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of their founding, Aakriti Kathak Academy, in collaboration with Oorja Productions (creators of Samraat, Rangeela Revisited, and Jogan) present - Rustic & Royal Rajasthan.

A delightful and engaging blend of Kathak - a North Indian classical dance form - with folk dances from the Langa, Manganiar and Kalbeliya peoples that originated in what is now the modern Indian state of Rajasthan awaits you this October.

Did you know that much of Rajasthani Folk and the Roma Gypsy traditions originated from the same place in India, sharing not only similar musical instruments, but even a shared genetic ancestry in the populations? These traditions, which have been passed from one generation to the next orally, are some of the most amazing aspects of India. The Roma Gypsy tradition went on to influence and inform modern Flamenco dance and music as well.

These folk traditions of Rajasthan which originated thousands of years ago amidst arid desert condition in tribes of goat and cow herders, are also analogous to the musical development of the American Western Frontier, when Cowboys would strum their guitars, whiling away their time on horseback. You see; herding goats and cows is often quite a passive undertaking - irrespective of the gulf in time and space - leaving many an hour for the dreaming up of artistic intricacies, while lazing under the shade of a tree, protected from the afternoon heat….

Juxtaposed with music that at its heart showcases authentic Rajasthani rusticity, is Kathak - a formal classical dance form that was performed for the Rajasthani Royalty of seventeenth century India and since has spread far and wide, internationally, in today’s world. One might be led to wonder whether a rigorous, technical dance would not clash when performed with comparatively simple folk music, but in reality this is not the case. The very richness of Rajasthani folk music blends perfectly with a technical dance form like Kathak, that blends into a fresh and unique fusion.
