Event description

Description

In the spring of 2016, the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute began engaging Dr. Mark Jansen, director of regional programming at UAMS about rural health care needs in Arkansas. That conversation with Dr. Jansen, who is also the invested chair for the Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield, George K. Mitchell, M.D., Endowed Chair in Primary Care, expanded to include other health care leaders who have a stake in raising the quality and availability of health care in rural areas. These leaders all supported creating a network of cross-collaboration among the many efforts currently operating in rural Arkansas and looking at manageable, short-term goals to address during the next year to two years. It is our belief that establishing such a network will be an important step toward creating a rural health care environment that will be more attractive to new physicians and foster an increase in quality care.

For the Rural Health Summit, we are inviting a larger pool of people and organizations operating in rural Arkansas health care. Our Summit participants come from all areas of the health care spectrum, from primary care to faith-based support groups, and will add their unique perspective to the discussion. We will be looking closely at the on-the-ground efforts in rural health and identifying gaps and possible areas of collaboration. This is the first step to a year of network building and consultation that will culminate in a follow-up summit in late 2017 or early 2018.

We are proud to receive partial support for this Summit from the Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas.
