In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Virginia Department of Health, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Virginia Rural Development office will host the Virginia Rural Health Funding Summit. The event is designed to identify IT and infrastructure funding needs of rural health care providers while connecting those providers with possible funding resources.
Our goal is to expand health funding to rural hospitals and clinics throughout Virginia. This collaborative event will assist in streamlining and improving the effectiveness of federal programs serving rural Virginia by helping rural health care providers leverage the full suite of USDA and HHS programs.

Panelist/Speaker Topic Descriptions
-Sandy McCleaf will share her expertise on Health Information Exchange and explore implementation in Virginia.
-Kathy Wibberly will discuss telehealth and how it is increasing access to care in rural areas.
-Keith Adams will discuss how grants under USDA's Rural Utilities Service provide for and improve upon existing Distance Learning or Telemedicine (DLT) Services in Rural America by funding equipment that allows rural residents to access medical services or educational services from hub sites located in larger urban or suburban areas, reducing the need to travel long distances.
-Martha Shifflett will serve as a panelist where she will bring 35 years of commercial and investment banking experience to the conversation and her persepective as a member of the board of directors for Sentara RMH Hospital, Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic, and the Harrisonburg Electric Commission.
-Mark DeFalco will give a short presentation on ARC’s role with rural health funding and talk about our funding process.
-Tamarah Holmes will present on DHCD programs and resources for addressing rural health needs such as access to care through telemedicine or infrastructure. She will also discuss physician recruitment and the Virginia Appalachian Regional Commission J1 Visa Waiver program.
-Timothy Pfohl will share examples of how Virginia Tobacco Commission investments has served the needs of citizens in the region’s healthcare workforce, along with expanding access to healthcare for residents for over the past 16 years.
