Event description

Description

Join us as the NYRR RUNCENTER for an introduction to weight training for runners!

Mention strength training to runners, and many will talk about a litany of body-weight exercises including lunges, unweighted squats, dips, pull-up, and planks. While all of these are important, true strength building can only take place while resisting heavier weights. This can be a daunting prospect to the average endurance athlete, as most of these exercises require a technical skill-set and proper instruction to avoid misplaced effort and injury. Many are scared off by the prospect of the learning curve, and hence avoid these exercises altogether. With proper assessment and instruction, these lifts can easily be incorporated into a workout that will build functional strength and, over time, make us faster, more efficient athletes. In this presentation, we will discuss not only the types of exercises that will produce the most benefit, but also the best time to engage in a program of lifting, employing periodization, and progressing the workout.

Presenters: Amy Kvilhaug; ACE-certified Personal Trainer, Division 1 head coach, softball (St. John’s, Radford); Jonathan Kline, NASM-certified Personal Trainer, USATF Level 1 Track & Field Coach, AFAA-certified Group Fitness Instructor, and masters competitor (multiple winner NYRR Runner of the Year, & USATF NY Long Distance Masters Athlete of the Year); and Jordan Dyer, NASM-certified Personal Trainer with specialties in power lifting, golf, and women’s and senior fitness.
