Strategy and management consultants often engage with busy executives. Executives are perennially short on time and expect succinct communication. They expect you to drive straight to the point without beating around the bush.
The Rule of Three is a powerful technique or principle required for writing or speaking. The rule of three is a writing principle based on the idea that humans process information through pattern recognition. Scientifically speaking, three is the smallest number of elements required to create a pattern.
Communication experts say if you want to stick something in someone’s head, put it in a sequence of three. The rule of three can help us craft memorable phrases, hence it is incredibly useful as a structural tool. Also, research shows that we can recall just three to four items from our short-term memory. This power has culminated in the Rule of Three.
A Latin saying, ‘Omne trium perfectum’ literally means ‘everything that comes in threes is perfect’.
Executives are often inundated with information, and with requests for decisions. Structuring the key arguments in groups of three gets their attention, allows them to quickly process and later remember the key recommendations from your argument. Furthermore, this rule is also an effective mechanism to communicate with anyone whom you wish to persuade with argument.
